Help with growing Marigolds from seed

I have decided to start my plants all from seed this year. This is all new to me but so far, the veggies are all looking great.

My problem is my marigolds. I have a dozen or two starts and have only maybe 2 that have done anything!

What would make marigolds not bloom after 4 months? They're tall and the foliage is full and green. They were planted in one of my first boxes that I only had 2 or 3 different kinds of compost in...I ended up adding some Miracle Grow organic fertilizer

I planted a marigold in each bed to help deter bugs, oh well! Couldn't find any bugs, but 1 of my marigolds is eaten down to the ground. All the leaves are chewed up. The bloom is still attached, guess it doesn't taste good. Is this what is supposed to
